Mini POS: taking card payments away from the counter

Mini POS: taking card payments away from the counter — Mini POS

Not every sale happens at a counter. A delivery driver at a doorstep, a stallholder at a weekend market, an engineer finishing a callout, a taxi at the end of a fare — all of them need to take a card, and none of them has a till to stand behind. That is the job a Mini POS is designed for.

What makes it different from a counter terminal

The AFS Lite weighs about 176 grams and fits in a jacket pocket or clips to a lanyard. It carries a 4″ touchscreen, accepts tap, chip and PIN, and is rated for a 1.2 metre drop — which, for a device used standing up, is the specification that matters most.

The screen rotates automatically. However the device is held when you pass it over, the interface flips upright for whoever is reading it. It sounds like a small thing until you watch someone try to enter a PIN on an upside-down keypad in the rain.

A full working day on one charge

Mobile payments fail on battery life more than on anything else. A 2000mAh battery gives roughly 14 hours of screen time and 550 or more transactions per charge, which covers a full delivery shift or a two-day market with an overnight charge in between.

Where it earns its keep

  • Delivery and courier rounds — cash on delivery becomes card on delivery, and your drivers stop carrying float.
  • Taxis and private hire — the fare is settled before the passenger opens the door.
  • Markets, pop-ups and events — no counter, no mains power, no problem.
  • Maintenance and callouts — the invoice is settled while you are still on site, not thirty days later.
  • Unattended and self-service — it doubles as a vending or self-service unit where no staff member is present.

The cash problem it quietly solves

Businesses that trade away from a counter usually default to cash, and cash carries costs that rarely appear on a spreadsheet: staff counting it, someone banking it, disputes over change, and the sales you simply lose when a customer has none on them. Every one of those disappears when the payment clears to your account at the point of sale.

Common questions

Does it need a phone to work?

No. It is a standalone terminal with its own 4G and Wi-Fi. There is no app to pair and nothing to go wrong when a driver’s phone battery dies.

Is it as secure as a counter terminal?

Yes. It carries the same PCI 6.x and EMV Level 1 and 2 approvals as our fixed terminals. PINs are entered on the device itself, never on a phone.

Can one business use both types of terminal?

Frequently, and it is often the right answer — a Smart POS on the counter and a Mini POS for deliveries and events, both settling into the same account.
